What is Muay Thai?

Muay Thai is a combat sport. It is stand-up kickboxing in nature with clinching involved. It is also known as “the art of eight limbs” because you are allowed to use you feet, knees, elbows, and fists.

Where does it originate from?

Muay Thai originates from Thailand.

What is that weird headband the fighters wear on their head?

Thai fighters wear typically wear a mongkol, blessed by a Buddhist monk, before their matches. It is considered a sacred and ceremonial piece. The mongkol represents their gym and family.

What equipment do you use in Muay Thai?

Just gloves and groin protection 🙂

Why are the shorts so short?

Muay Thai fighters wear short shorts because it is more functional. Since Muay Thai is heavy in kicking, it allows for an easier ability to kick.

What is that dance the fighters do before a fight?

That dance is the Wai Kru. The Wai Kru is to display respect to the teachers, family, and to ask the gods for blessings and protection.
